Emigrated with his father, Klaas Jz Beukma (1789-1860), to America in 1835, where he worked as gardener, farmer, carpenter and was interested in daguerreotyping. Travelled back to the Netherlands in 1847 and most probably took some plates (marked E. White, maker. New York) and equipment back home for daguerreotyping. Announcement in the Groninger Courant, june 1847, that he was taking daguerreotypes during a period of 3 - 4 weeks "in Altena, bij VAN WARTUM, buiten de Steentilpoort." Returned shortly hereafter back to America for some period.

First listed in 1841 in New York City. Moved several times in NY City around Broadway (183, 175, 281, 247, 217). Around 1846 he took over Johnson's Portrait Gallery in New Orléans and was listed as E. White and Co.
According to Alexander Beckers "My daguerreotype experience" (1889): "In the spring of 1844 Mr. Edward White bought one of the large Voigtlander instruments [...]"
