He took the first daguerreotypes in the UK (of London) starting on the 13th of September 1839 just seven days after the first public disclosure of the practicalities of the process.
He was probably part of Daguerre's circle, he wrote a short book on the daguerreotype process with Francis Fauvel-Gouraud (see http://books.google.co.uk/books/about/The_Daguerreotype.html?id=JXZFMwEACAAJ&redir_esc=y ). Fauvel-Gouraud also wrote a book with Daguerre see https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=QciMnQEACAAJ&dq=inauthor:%22Francis+Fauvel-Gouraud%22&hl=en&sa=X&ei=zTehVMmMFOrR7Ab52IH4Cw&ved=0CCcQ6AEwAjgK )
St. Croix may not have been his real name.
