Portrait of Joseph Bateson sitting and wearing his mayoral chain. The mayoral mace is propped beside his chair. Behind him is a painted backdrop of columns.
Joseph Bateson was mayor of Leeds in 1849 and it is likely that he arranged for these six portraits of whig mayors to be taken. His is the only image with any hand colouring, the only one in an oval mount and has been taken so that he is closer to the camera. Bateson died in 1867.
