An iodine fuming box with glass liner composed of separate pieces of glass (parts missing). The cover is also missing. The plate would be held in the missing lid, suspended above the iodine crystals placed in the glass try. The removable glass plate's purpose is to slide out to expose the plate to iodine fumes. Iodine would have combined with the surface of the silver plate to form a light sensitive, silver iodide layer.
