James Holdforth was the first Roman Catholic mayor to be elected since since the reformation 300 years before. He served as mayor from 1838 - 39.

Photographic studio at 27 Park Row (27 Park Lane in other sources) from 14th April 1842. He was at 5 West Bar from 1849, though whether this was in addition to Park Row or not is not yet known.
By 1851 the business was trading as Samuel Topham and Son.
